In Horrorwitz's words:
A lot of my friends know how obsessed I am with Giallo movies. Not just the films but the soundtracks too. Well about 10 years ago I started planning a CD compilation of the very best tracks from the scores to these modern Italian thrillers. Then I kind of shelved the idea when the once rare and unreleased soundtracks started getting released in droves because I just couldn't keep up with them all and I wanted to be thorough. So recently I decided to go back and finish the compilation and, with the help of a few friends, it ended up being 3 CDs, each just under 80 minutes!

Each volume fits perfectly onto 1 blank CD-R disc, or you can save them as mp3 files and play them from your hard drive or ipod player. I would recommend checking the 1st volume out first to see if you dig it. The first 2 volumes contain my all time favorite themes and cues, mostly from the late '60s and '70s, by composers such as Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Goblin and many others. The 3rd volume contains some of the more upbeat pop, rock and r&b songs from the Giallo party and club scenes! There are several rare and unreleased tracks and some real obscurities amongst the more well known composers. Enjoy!

Each file contains the cover art and track listings. The download links are in the comments. The good doctor sez: Dig it, baby!

ELECTRIC LARRY'S FUNKTASMIC FREAK-OUT FESTIVAL CD

Here is an exclusive: The self-proclaimed "ultimate party CD" from mix-master Electric Larry! Not sure who this "Electric Larry" is but the back cover credits "technical assistance" to Brian D. Horrorwitz so I have my suspicions! What we have is an album length (44 minute) almost continuous groove that mixes some classic funky tunes - some obscure and some not so obscure - of different varieties and eras (but mostly 1970s) and slices, dices, re-arranges and adds some wacked-out and unexpected samples to the beats. This would actually make a great CD to play at a dance party and, since there are some "naughty" samples it will definitely clear out the riff-raff.

You can preview or listen to the entire thing below

Like Horrorwitz I too wish they'd have focused a bit more on his music and less on his shenanigans but considering they had quite a bit of ground to cover in only 25 minutes we can forgive them. Amusez-vous!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v21.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dcdc792901bd16e30%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331955396%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7B80CBC754947778670272E00292452BA7A0D650.852C7F23F0E57D23869A7CFA6F812C7AE5095D74%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dcdc792901bd16e30%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DYTKu1o4gaMGipnRhJ3IXw6WsFkA&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Serge Gainsbourg et ses amis (playlist)

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Each of the first 6 issues came with a 7" single or 7" EP spotlighting music by one film composer. (The later issues came with CD comps featuring mostly dj remixes and such) The third issue, issue #02 (the first was numbered #00), featured 5 tracks by soundtrack composer Piero Umiliani listed as being from (presumably) a movie called La Vacanza from 1966. Unfortunately the record sleeve and magazine offer no other recording information other than the year, movie and track titles. The tracks are all pretty cool and the best one, called "Let's Try", is particularly great. It starts as a slow jazzy swing and then jumps into a bouncy sixties spy-esque theme with guitar and horns. Problem is, there seems to be some mystery about where these tracks actually come from. There doesn't seem to be a movie with that title that actually has music composed by Umiliani in it. Soundtrack historian and liner note author John Bender writes on his excellent Euro Film Score Society newsgroup:

"Somewhere along the line I must have come across information to indicate that the 5 cuts on the Piero Umiliani EP released by Il Giaguaro magazine are actually from a 1964 movie directed by Adriano Barbano called IL TRAMONTANA."

"It is worth mentioning that the IMDB lists only one movie to director Barbano, and it is IL TRAMONTANA - with a score by Umiliani! Further research confirms that IL TRAMONTANA was Barbano's first and only film. He died in 1985 while working on what would have been his second film JOURNEY TO GALATINA (never completed)."

"Exactly why the Il Giaguaro record calls the film LA VACANZA is a mystery. The only possible solution might be that LA VACANZA could have been an Italian television production directed by Barbano and scored by Umilani. I say this because between IL TRAMONTANA (1964), and the never-filmed JOURNEY TO GALATINA in 1985, Barbano worked exclusively for TV. It is certainly possible that Umilani collaborated with him during those 11 years on a mini-series or made-for-TV film. Either this, or perhaps Umiliani was remembering LA VACANZA as an alternate title of IL TRAMONTANA when he gave the five cues to Il Giaguaro for the vinyl recording."

So apart from Mr. Bender's educated guesswork that leads him to assume the music might be from a movie called Il Tramontana there is bupkis information. For now it remains a mystery! Does the music come from Il Tramontana? Is there another La Vacanza no one knows about? Is Il Giaguaro Italian for "practical joke"? If anyone has any idea for sure where the tracks come from please let the good doctor know the score (hee hee) and we'll all sleep just a bit better tonight. Now, in the meanwhile, let's all dig the incredibly cool track "Let's Try"...

If the media player above doesn't show up on your web browser you can also play it on your computer by clicking here.

OR you can download the track by right clicking here and selecting "save target as..." to save it to your hard drive.

THE SPY WHO WENT POP! You may at some point have purchased the "Vampyros Lesbos" soundtrack. But unless you have the original release, the one pictured above, you have not heard it all! Only this release contains all 24 tracks and they are ALL essential!

If, in your travels, you ever meet a German bloke named Peter Blumenstock, slap him on the back for me and buy him a beer. For it was he and his love of European exploitation movies - what film historian Craig Ledbetter dubbed "Eurotrash" - that gave him the inspiration to create the collector's CD label Lucertola. In 1994, for his first CD, Blumenstock released the excellent soundtrack compilation CD "The Films of Jean Rollin" to a limited edition of 1,200 copies. Now, understand that this music was really still very much a cult thing at this time. You couldn't even call it a cult, really, hardly anybody knew about this shit. And I believe that this "labor of love" release got a slow start start and those 1,200 took awhile to sell. Hard to believe now but it's true! And it's for that reason, it would seem, that upon releasing the next CD, "3 Films by Jess Franco", the run was a mere 500 copies. Lo and behold, this time around this strange new CD became a surprise blowout! (If you own one of these bad boys, go and slap yourself on the back!) So much so that the German progressive rock label Crippled Dick Hot Wax immediately picked up the rights. Only upon quickly re-releasing it the name was somewhat deceptively re-titled to "Vampyros Lesbos - Sexadelic Dance Party", a somewhat more obvious and commercially "hip" title. I say deceptive because the music tracks heard on this collection were actually used by Jess Franco for 3 different movies he shot back-to-back, all starring the lovely "Susann Korda" (aka Soledad Miranda), the titles of which are most commonly known as "She Killed in Ecstasy", "Vampyros Lesbos" and "The Devil Came From Akasava" (all released by the prolific director in 1970).

The music itself, composed by Manfred Hübler and Siegfried Schwab, was originally taken from 2 1969 LP releases (pictured above) "Sexadelic" and "Psychedelic Dance Party" (credited to the The Vampires' Sound Incorporation!). What makes the original "3 Films..." CD so much better is, for a start, that it retains a more satisfying order of the tracks. Tracks 1 to 11 are credited to the aforementioned Vampires' Sound Incorporation and seem to all be taken from that particular LP, while tracks 12 to 24 are presumably all from the "Sexadelic" record. The subsequent releases mix-up the order of the tracks. But what's much worse, the first re-issue, the "Vampyros Lesbos" CD removed a whopping 10 tracks!! Sadly it was this same sliced-and-diced version that the New York based Motel label re-released in the USA in 1996. And to make things even more confusing, the LP version and picture disc LP release (seen below) had slightly different tracks then the "Vampyros Lesbos" CD. That is, because of the LP's even shorter running time, several more tracks were removed while a few not on the CD were then added in hopes of making the customer double-dip (or triple if you also bought the pic-disc). But even if you had all 3 "Vampyros Lesbos" releases, the CD, the LP and the picture disc, you still did not have all 24 tracks as on the 1 original "3 Films..." CD release. Rumors of another re-issue coming out in 2006 seemed hopeful. And although some of the missing tracks were added, not all of the tracks were restored despite a (probably unnecessary) re-mastering. Now up to 17 tracks, perhaps there are plans for yet another re-release? Or would that be a re-re-release? How many times do these geezers expect us to buy this thing? Overall, some of the removed tracks were a bit more along the lines of a free-form experimental sound and not nearly as pop. But with these tracks in place and in context of the original order, listening to the full CD becomes a longer, more satisfying and mind blowing trip. True, this is only personal opinion, of course, but remember: I am your doctor and I know what's good for you!

The Vampyros releases, considering their eclectic nature (1969 hard-to-define psyche-ish pop-rock music used in 3 bizarre 1970 Euro movies no one has seen), were considerably huge and became big college radio hits. Blumenstock himself went on to edit several amazing and essential soundtrack comp releases for Crippled Dick (the "Beat at Cinecittà" series and others) as well as some must-have releases on his own Lucertola label. As for the success of Vampyros, a promotional single was released and a somewhat uneven dance remix CD / double LP was produced (both seen below). At about the time of the original CD release director Jess Franco was coming out of his mini-retirement / film-making break with the release of his newest feature, the horror-sex-rock thriller "Killer Barbies" starring the Spanish garage punk band of the same name. The popularity of the Vampyros Lesbos CD and the soon-to-be emerging DVD market helped to re-ignite the career of this amazing director and bring attention to his incredible movies. And the enormous cult following of the Vampyros sounds ignited a wave of '60s / '70s Euro soundtrack, pop, lounge and other music releases that, although slowing down a bit in recent years, has not really ever let up since; turning on new fans to the sounds of composers and musicians such as Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Riz Ortolani, Stelvio Cipriani, Italian prog rock band Goblin and many others. Not to mention the releases, re-releases and compilations of eclectic pop, lounge, library music and the "incredibly strange". Mr. Blumenstock, I SALUTE YOU, SIR!

Now, as your doctor, I command you to go to the comments below where you will find the complete track listing and download link.
